How to read the Bible

Quick summary:
Read the New Testament first.  Do that twice.  Then read the Old Testament.  Note that there are some sections that are hard to read such as long lists of genealogies and detailed Old Testament “religious rituals”.  It is fine to skip over those sections the first time reading the Bible.  You can come back to them later.  Just get the big picture first on your first reading.

  • Overview of what is in the Bible.  Hint:  It is NOT something like a history book or novel where the best way to read it is to start on page 1 and read to the end.
  • What is the story being told.  Hint:  God integrated the parent / child relationship into our design and we know children do not always listen.  We see that in many  of the actions of those in Bible — and in ourselves.
  • Important nuances to understand.  Yes, important to help understand things you will read.

The average sized Bible is about 1,200 pages.  While the 3 pages linked below may seem like a bunch to read, they are small compared to 1,200.  If you intend to start reading the Bible for yourself, these 3 pages will help avoid a bunch of confusion and frustration.

As with most of the pages on this site, remember to review the verses on the bottom of the page.  Never rely on just what people say – see what God says.
